Firstly, not all places in the world are safe, secondly you need to do some research before going to a country you know nothing about, know what will you find there and specially be careful because be honest, the world is not a completely safe place. I'm from Ecuador. I have girl friends who have come here and liked the country nothing happened to them. PLEASE DO NOT GENERALISE YOUR OPINION. The problem arent the countries but that tourists have to respect the fact that they are in a country they dont know even if they think they do(travel agencies dont have the knowledge). For example if a latin american woman which isnt looking like shit travels to a western city but goes to a wrong neighbourhood at the wrong time i would say she is gonna get raped too.

I'd say it's a one off. Last time I saw this happened in Guatemala it was another tourist who committed the crime. In general tourists are respected in these countries because the police will actually work hard to protect the tourism industry.
